Fathers are the Foundation of Everything

It seems presumptuous, but it's true.

The title of this might seem presumptuous. What do I mean by it?

God, the eternal Father, created the world. In that sense, a Father is literally the foundation of everything. His words became flesh and his poetry is the basis of all reality.

And every family on heaven and on earth is named after this Father (Ephesians 3:14-15). The Greek word for “family” even hints at this: patria. Patriarch.

As fathers, God shares his own name with us. He invests us with purpose and responsibility. Because we are named after him, we are the foundations for our families and for generations that come after us.

Even if you don’t believe in the God of the Bible, this is still how the world works, whether you like it or not. It is part of the DNA of humanity.

Our families, in turn, are the building blocks of civilization. Of life on this earth. A culture is only as strong as its fathers.

This is a tremendous weight. Thankfully, He has given us big shoulders so we can carry this weight.

As a father, you are a foundation, whether you like it or not.

You can be a solid foundation. One that is anchored in rock. Unmovable. The beginning of a fortress that will stand against armies.

Or you can be a weak foundation. Cracked, ever-shifting, unable to hold any weight. One that crumbles in the face of a mild wind.
