Fix Your Own Face
Being a man means doing the right thing even when you don’t feel like it. Even when you know you will suffer. And not complaining about it.
This becomes an issue when problems are unexpected. If you have reserved your time for something, you treat it as your time, and any imposition upon that time is a personal affront to your sovereignty.
We are selfish with time we think is our own. Because we forget that the time we have has been given to us as a gift.
We might up doing the right thing, but we have thrown a fit and complained about it the entire time leading up to it and during the effort.
And our sons are paying attention.
Are you frustrated when your children do what you say, but they make it clear they are not happy about it?
Guess where they learned that discontent from?
Masculinity is not just the assumption of responsibility, but the glad assumption of responsibility. Joyful work, cheerful problem-solving. Steady resolve toward suffering.
Do not let your children drag their feet and have long faces while they work.
And in order to do that, you have to fix your own face when you work.
