You want your boys to grow up to be men who are dangerous. They are squires. Knights in training. This doesn’t mean that they only know how to physically fight. It means they can face danger when it is called for, in whatever form it happens to take. It means they do not shy away from confronting dangerous people and dangerous ideas. It means they won’t have the power to take responsibility for anything worthwhile.

A boy who is not dangerous will not be able to protect anything. He will not be able to ascend to any sort of manhood.

Psalm 127 speaks of the children of your youth as arrows in the hand of a warrior. Your children are weapons.

Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127:5

The goal at the end is speaking with your enemies in the gate. The gates of a city were where accusations were brought and judgments rendered. It was where the important men of the city gathered to decide important political matters.

And here we see father and sons standing together, in the gate, and not being ashamed. His sons help defend his good name. Because they have become dangerous.

How do you raise sons that will grow up to be dangerous men? Here are 11 ways.
